Vaccinations begin at Kentucky care facility | News

Louisville, Kentucky (AP) — Several long-term care facilities in Kentucky have begun vaccination of residents, Governor Andy Beshear announced on Monday.

“This is the beginning of the end of the virus, and these vaccines will save lives, especially in long-term care,” Bescher said at a news conference.

Two-thirds of Kentucky’s coronavirus deaths are in state-sponsored housing and long-term care facilities. The Governor of the Democratic Party added that vaccination of these groups would be completed by early March and more deaths need to be prevented.

Kentucky received the first shipment of the new COVID-19 vaccine last week. Since then, approximately 7,000 Kentucky citizens, most of whom are hospital health care workers, have been vaccinated. By the end of December, the state is projected to receive approximately 175,800 doses.

Walgreens Pharmacy will provide COVID-19 vaccination at approximately 800 long-term care facilities throughout Kentucky through a federal pharmacy long-term care program partnership.

Bescher argued that vaccination would not be mandatory and denied concerns that many residents and workers would hesitate to get vaccinated.

“I’ve never heard of a facility where a good deal says no to it,” he said.

State Public Health Commissioner Dr. Stephen Stack urged Kentucky citizens to prioritize older, higher-risk individuals, even as more vaccination opportunities open up in the coming months.

“By helping protect them, we not only protect those individuals, but also all other people who may have COVID, as well as life-saving emergency unrelated to COVID. It frees the hospital’s capacity for many other Kentuckies who may need it, “he said.

Kentucky reported 1,988 newly confirmed coronavirus cases and 15 COVID-19-related deaths on Monday. Over 1,500 Kentucky citizens have been hospitalized for the virus.

The state test positive rate is 8.64%. According to the World Health Organization, the positive rate is an indicator of the degree of virus spread. If the rate is less than 5% in 2 weeks and the test is extensive, the virus is considered to be under control.
