Mayor Dagan receives COVID-19 vaccine and outlines the city’s deployment plan

Detroit (WXYZ) — Mayor of Detroit Mike Dagan received the COVID-19 vaccine and outlined the city’s vaccine introduction plan at a press conference on Tuesday.

The city received its first dose of Moderna vaccine on Monday. The plan includes vaccination of front-line health department staff, fire / EMS staff, home health care workers, nursing homes, and life support facilities.

Mayor Dagan believed that vaccination was the right thing to do, but said he would not be obliged.

“We can’t discuss whether to get vaccinated by the federal government without acknowledging the history of racism we’ve experienced in the healthcare system,” Dagan said.

As an example, the mayor referred to a 1932-1972 Tuskegee study in which the federal government deliberately withheld treatment of syphilis from a group of black men.

“This is something very much in the consciousness of many Detroit,” Duggan said. “There is a higher level of distrust.”

By vaccination with the COVID-19 vaccine at a press conference, Dagan hopes that Detroit leaders can set a positive example and recommend vaccination to the community when the time comes.

Dr. Audrey Gregory, CEO of the recently vaccinated Detroit Medical Center, attended a press conference and said the experience was no different than getting a flu shot. Four days later she said she had a pain in her arm. She said she had never heard of any side effects other than arm pain in the 1,500 vaccinated DMC team members and providers.

Dr. Gregory said he was aware of the concerns but urged everyone to trust science and make decisions for loved ones and the community as a whole.

“There is another COVID-19 vaccine in our toolkit,” said Dr. Gregory.

The mayor was joined by Chief Public Health Officer Dennis Fair and Henry Ford Health System President Light Lasitter, who also vaccinated at a press conference.
