The first batch of 10,000 Covid-19 vaccines arrived in Malta on Sunday morning. The vaccine will begin to be distributed on Sunday.

The vaccine was loaded onto a private jet that landed at Malta International Airport at around 10:40 am.

Karl Fargia, Head of Malta’s Central Procurement and Supply Department, tweeted a photo of an ice-filled box at 8:43 am.

Medical cargo arrived under strict security. A rigorous process must be followed to keep the vial stable and at a specific temperature.

Prime Minister Robert Abela and Health Minister Chris Fern will hold a press conference later this morning.

The first batch of vaccine was manufactured by Pfizer. This was the first vaccine approved for use by the European Medicines Agency and the European Medicines Agency. More batches will arrive in the coming days and weeks.

Infectious disease unit nurses will be the first Maltese to be vaccinated against Covid-19 tomorrow.

The ITU, IDU, emergency department, and other staff dealing with Covid-19 patients will also be vaccinated on Sunday. Eventually, all hospital staff will be vaccinated. Vaccinations for primary health care workers and swab center staff will begin on Monday.

The process at Gozo General Hospital will begin on Tuesday. Next, staff at Mount Carmel Hospital Bofa, St. Thomas Hospital and the Good Samaritan Facility will be vaccinated.

Residents and staff of St. Vincent and the Pole will be vaccinated from January 1st to 6th. Private health care workers then receive the vaccine.

People over the age of 85 will begin receiving vaccination letters from January 7th. They are given the date and time of their first and second shots.

The helpline – 145 – was launched to help those asking questions about the vaccine process.

You will also receive a letter explaining the importance of vaccination. This letter is provided free of charge and is not required.

Health director Charmaine Gauci said last week that some people experience mild side effects after vaccination, but everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated.

The vaccine is given twice every 21 days.

The first shot boosts Peson’s immunity to Covid-19 to about 52%. The second shot raises it to 95%.
