On Sunday, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environment (DHEC) announced that the state had identified 273,659 COVID-19 cases, including 4,370 identified on Christmas Day.
Sunday’s report set a new state-wide record for daily coronavirus cases. Previously, the 3,648 new cases set on December 18th were the best.
In Berkeley County, 8,827 cases were identified, 110 of which died by Friday night.
To date, 100,297 tests have been conducted.
According to DHEC data obtained by Berkeley Independent, the newest cases of coronavirus were found between July 1st and August 1st. The number dropped significantly until October 1st, the lowest of only 7 new cases. The number of newly confirmed cases has been increasing slowly since it increased again with 74 new cases on December 11. 69 new cases were identified on Christmas Day, the last day of data availability.
“As of December 25, 2020, 88.8% of the 164,401 people [across the state] Symptom onset data is estimated to have recovered from COVID-19, and 11.2 percent is estimated to remain ill, “the report said.
Next to Dorchester County, 108,717 tests were performed, 7,958 cases were confirmed, and 252 cases required hospitalization. A total of 125 people died from the virus in Dorchester County.
Christmas Eve in Dorchester County set a record of 107 confirmed cases. The highest price for the last day was July 13th. Since September 19, when 13 new cases occurred in Dorchester County, the numbers have steadily increased through the highest Christmas Eve.
The top county in South Carolina for new coronavirus cases reported on Sunday was Greenville in 897. Spartanberg, 412; and Lexington, 308.
DHEC officials said the first allocation of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine arrived on December 14-16, including 42,900 doses.
“Healthcare facilities have been assigned directly by the federal government and have begun vaccination of front-line healthcare professionals in accordance with Phase 1a vaccination guidance,” according to a prepared statement sent to the media. “The state is expected to receive doses of 200,000 to 300,000 by the end of the year, but those amounts are subject to change.”
Both DEHEC and federal sources have stated that the goal is to provide sufficient COVID-19 vaccine to all who wish to be vaccinated. However, vaccine supply is limited in the early stages of the national COVID-19 vaccination program.
