Kirkland, Washington. — The sun was shining as the care facility was ready at the Kirkland Life Care Center on Monday morning. First COVID-19 vaccinationTen months after the virus, which was unknown at the time, spread rapidly to residents and staff.
The Life Care Center became the first COVID-19 virus outbreak in the United States at the end of February. Within a month, 39 inhabitants died.
“It could have happened everywhere, it just happened here,” said nurse Chelsea Ernest.
Ernest works as a Nursing Director at Federal Way’s sister facility, but volunteered to work at Kirkland’s Life Care Center during the worst of times when many of his staff were ill and died daily.
“It was very difficult to see these families and these patients experience this,” Ernest said. “I don’t want to do it again, but if I have to do it, I want to do it.”

On Monday, Ernest was one of the first recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine when the first vaccine arrived at the facility.
Life Care Center staff and residents are vaccinated through a federal vaccination program by Walgreens and CVS. The program started in Washington on Monday. The Secretary-General of Kirkland’s Life Care Center said it was an important day for all care facilities and it “makes a little more sense” to see vaccinations take place there.
While Kirkland’s facilities were the first and most devastated in the state, the outbreak quickly spread. At least one COVID-19 case has occurred in all skilled nursing facilities except two in King County.

Care facility-related cases account for only 6% of COVID-19 cases across the state, but 52% of state deaths.
In December, weekly COVID-19 illnesses associated with long-term care facilities reached near pandemic highs. However, the death toll is still significantly lower than in spring. The vaccine is now ready to reach the most vulnerable people.
Residents and staff do not need to be vaccinated.
