The Indonesian island of Sumba experiences its first earthquake in 2021: BMKG
Jakarta (Antara) – A 5.0-magnitude earthquake jolted northwest Sumba Island in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province Friday morning, but did not trigger a tsunami.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has confirmed receiving immediate reports of injuries and damages in the aftermath of the earthquake that was observed to be the first in the region on the first day of 2021.
The earthquake, whose epicenter was about 21 kilometers northwest of Tampulaka, capital of Sumba Barat Daya district, at a depth of 83 kilometers, sparked fear and panic among many residents who fled their homes.
The BMKG confirmed that the tremors could be felt by those in several other areas in East Nusa Tenggara and its adjacent district, West Nusa Tenggara, including Wingapo, Ikabubak and Bima.
As of 7 a.m. local time, no aftershocks have been reported following the first earthquake, but those on Sumba Island have been advised to remain alert, as BMKG has often recorded significant seismic activity in the area.
The agency stated that an earthquake measuring 6.0 degrees hit the regions of Sumba Timor district on October 1, 2018, causing damage to several homes and injuring many people.
On October 2, 2018, another 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the district again, damaging several other homes.
Earthquakes regularly shake different parts of Indonesia as the country is located on the Pacific Belt, also known as the Ring of Fire, where numerous tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activities.
One of the most violent earthquakes to hit eastern Indonesia occurred in several regions of Central Sulawesi Province on September 28, 2018.
The 7.4 magnitude earthquake followed by the tsunami that struck Palu City, Dongala, Paringi Mutong and Siji provinces on September 28, 2018, killed 2,102 people, injured 4,612 others, and lost 680 others.
A total of 68,451 homes were seriously damaged, while 78,994 people were displaced.
Authorities and humanitarian workers decided to bury a large number of rotting bodies in mass graves.
Meanwhile, the material losses caused by the two deadly disasters are estimated at 15.29 trillion rupees.
The capital of Palu County bore the brunt of the disaster, recording material losses and damages of 7.6 trillion rupees, or 50 percent of the total estimate, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
Material damage and loss in the Siji region was recorded at 9 trillion rupees or 32.1 per cent; Dongala District, valued at 2.1 trillion rupees, or 13.8 percent; And Barigi Mutung region at 631 billion rupees, or 4.1%.
Material damages in the four affected areas amounted to an estimated 13.27 trillion rupees, while material losses were around 2.02 trillion rupees, the agency revealed in October 2018.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
