Over the past several days, seismic activity from Merapi volcano – the most active in Indonesia – has increased dramatically, indicating that a more intense phase of volcanic activity is on its way. Volcanologists in Indonesia recorded a record number of volcanic earthquakes beneath the volcano, which is 720 earthquakes yesterday and 680 the previous day, both of which represent new records in recent months. The average for November was around 30 ahead of these records. Of particular concern is that many of the newly discovered tremors may be caused by magma breaking down rocks that has the potential to create new magma channels or expand existing channels within the volcano itself. These tremors are known as volcanic tectonic earthquakes and they can be very dangerous. In response to the latest activity, local authorities have extended the current state of emergency for Merapi for another month. As many as 240 people, who were recently evacuated from homes located in particularly dangerous places around the slopes of the volcano, will need to be patient before they are allowed to return home.

It may only be a matter of time before new magma reappears from the summit opening. The big question is when and how much. If the magma volume was large enough to create a dome larger than the crater capacity, this would almost certainly generate very dangerous and possibly large glowing avalanches, known as lava flows. These turbulent hot flows can destroy everything in their path and can destroy large areas of the lower terrain, especially around river valleys in the region at a distance of 10-20 km from the volcano.

Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and has been producing such flows, often very large, quite often. This and the fact that its slopes are inhabited makes it one of the deadliest volcanoes in which lava flows have repeatedly caused many casualties.
