The system is expected to automatically issue a warning about 10 seconds before the earthquake, or 20 to 30 minutes before the tsunami hits the coast, said the Central Weather Bureau (CWB), which is part of the team that started the project. .

President Tsai Ing-wen () hailed the new system as part of the government’s forward-looking infrastructure development plan, which was launched in 2017 and covers a wide range of projects to be implemented over the next three decades.

She said the system could help prevent loss of life and property damage.

As part of the system, nine underwater seismic stations have been installed at the ocean floor at depths of up to 5,554 meters, and the cable depth between the stations is 5,796 meters, according to the CWB.

Minister of Transport and Communications Lin Chia Long (林佳龍) said that another 800 kilometers of submarine cables will be laid to detect seismic activity in the future.

Construction on the expansion project, which will include submarine cables running from southern Taiwan to the sea floor near the Manila Trench, will begin this year, and the system is expected to come into operation in 2024, the CWB said, adding that frequent earthquakes originate near a trench.
