SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) – Here’s a look at the most important news of the day as of 4pm

The COVID-19 death toll remains at 1,513 in South Dakota, according to a Monday update from the South Dakota Department of Health.

On Monday, 111 new cases of coronavirus were announced, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 100,643, up from Sunday (100,532). The total of recovered cases now reached 93,099, up from Sunday (93,031).

The number of active cases now reached 6,031, up from Sunday (5,988).

The number of hospitalizations currently stands at 268, up from Sunday (262). The total number of hospitalizations reached 5,742 cases, up from Sunday (5,732).

The total number of negative people is now 275,713, up from Sunday (275,423).

There were 401 new people tested on Monday. The new person tested positive rate on Monday is 27%.

The most recent 7-day test positive rate reported by the Ministry of Health is 16.5%. The Ministry of Health calculates this based on results of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test results but does not release total numbers for the number of PCR tests performed per day. The most recent one-day PCR test positive rate is 16.1%.

Forty counties in South Dakota are listed as having “significant” community spread, 15 counties in South Dakota are listed as “moderate” and 11 South Dakota counties are listed as having “minimum” community spread.

Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken has kicked off the first COVID-19 update for 2021 as a “Thank You” community for taking mitigation measures seriously.

According to data for the past four weeks, in December, there was a significant drop in active cases in Sioux Falls. Tinhaken said the number of hospitalizations has decreased by 50 percent and has stabilized.

As of Monday, Lincoln and Minha County combined had 1,957 active cases, currently 89 hospitalizations and 337 deaths. The most recent 7-day positive rate is 44.1%.

For the second time in less than a month, an earthquake was reported in South Dakota.

The United States Geological Survey reported a 3.1-magnitude earthquake in Boonehome County, about 4.2 miles northwest of Tyndall. On December 9, a 3.2 earthquake was reported in Edmonds County.

The report said the earthquake occurred at 8:55 a.m. Monday.

There were no reports of damage at this time. According to the USGS, damage does not usually happen until the earthquake is somewhere above 4 or 5 in magnitude.
