Taoiseach suggested that the government is unlikely to reintroduce the 2 km travel limit and that schools are likely to be closed until at least the end of January.

Micheál Martin said opening a school with “one million people out” on the way to and from the classroom would be a major challenge in controlling the spread of the virus.

But he said reducing the 5km radius proposed by Greens leader Eamon Ryan was “not on the agenda.”

“We believe that 5km is a very restrictive tool for people, and we are very conscious of psychological and mental health, that is, people’s well-being,” he told RTE News at One.

Martin said the recent surge in cases means that people need to significantly reduce their movements over the next few weeks.

“It’s about the mobilization of a million people in the context of a very high infection of the virus in the community,” he said.

Martin added that the most effective way to limit the burden on hospitals is to tell people to stay home.

He said the cabinet would decide whether to keep the school closed tomorrow.

And he and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan agree that “there is a problem with having one million people on the go, which essentially means opening a school.” Insisted.
