Over 200 new COVID-19 cases reported for the first time in the Waterloo region
Waterloo Public Health announced more than 200 COVID-19 cases in the region on Sunday for the first time since the pandemic began in March last year.
The agency listed 203 new COVID-19 cases, boosting the total number of cases to 7,339.
On Saturday, there were actually 152 new positive tests against coronavirus, and other new cases were added in the previous 24 hours.
A large number of new cases also helped boost the total number of rapidly increasing active cases to 1,087. This number includes 23 inpatients, 9 of whom are in the intensive care unit.
In addition, an additional 102 people were removed from the virus, increasing the total number of cases resolved to 6,072.
One new COVID-19-related death was reported by Waterloo Public Health on Sunday, boosting the death toll in the area to 175.
The new death was reported to be a resident of Kitchener’s Chartwell Westmount Long Term Care.
Since the outbreak was first declared on December 27, 13 residents and 13 staff have been positive in the house.
Outbreaks are one of 35 in the region, including 16 in long-term care and retirement homes.
Waterloo Regional Police announced a new outbreak in the northern district of Waterloo on Friday night after three police officers tested positive for the coronavirus.
A total of 12 service members have been positive since the pandemic broke out in March last year.
Elsewhere, the state reported 3,945 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 215,782.
This is one of the largest daily increases in the number of cases in Ontario since the pandemic began. On Friday, 4,249 cases were reported, of which about 450 were part of the data backlog.
An additional 61 deaths were also announced, bringing the state’s death to 4,983.
