27 years later: Remember the Northridge earthquake
27 years ago on January 17, 1994, Northridge was struck by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake, which greatly affected Santa Clarita and other surrounding areas.
The Northridge earthquake killed 57 people, 1,500 seriously injured, and $ 42 billion in property damage, according to officials from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Tarzana resident Craig Renitsky and on-call disaster operator was among the hundreds of Red Cross volunteers who responded when the earthquake struck. “It is a day I will never forget,” said Rinitzky in a statement. “My memory is the relief that I have planned in advance and properly prepared for such a disaster. It is one of the reasons I have been able to help others. Everyone should be prepared to survive the next great earthquake in southern California. “
The residents of Santa Clarita were greatly affected by the collapse of Interstate 14 over Highway 5 in Newhall Corridor, which greatly affected travel in and out of the canyon until it reopened after approximately six months.
During the interim period, the Santa Clarita Valley and northern communities were practically cut off from the larger Los Angeles Basin, leaving Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital without water.

The Los Angeles area of the American Red Cross mobilized 15,000 workers, sheltered nearly 22,000 people, provided 1.7 million meals, and counseled more than 40,000 affected California residents.
Since the earthquake struck, the Red Cross has urged Southern California residents to take precautions to prepare their families for the next “great earthquake”. According to a report by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there is a 60 percent chance of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in the next 30 years in Los Angeles.
Their new campaign PrepareSoCal seeks to provide emergency preparedness education to every family in the most vulnerable neighborhoods across Southern California. After a major disaster, families must be provided with sufficient food, water, and emergency supplies to last for two weeks until outside help arrives. The Red Cross recommends the following basic advice:
Build an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit including items like water, non-perishable food, flashlight with extra batteries, battery-powered radio and first aid kit. Create an emergency plan with your family members, covering what to do if everyone is separated as well as meeting places in the event of a sudden emergency – a meeting place outside your home in the event of a fire, and another outside your area, in the event that you are unable to return home or force you to Evacuation. Learn what to do before, during, and after wildfires, earthquakes, and house fires. Make sure that at least one member of your family is fully trained to administer CPR. Download the Red Cross emergency smartphone app, which provides access to 35 different severe weather and emergency alerts, expert advice on disaster preparedness and response, and a map to help you locate open Red Cross shelters.
Supplies for emergency tools can be difficult due to a pandemic, and availability can be exacerbated in the event of a disaster, so now is the best time to start gathering your supplies. It is important to stay up-to-date on restrictions from your state and local public health authorities as they may affect your actions, the resources available, and shelter facilities in the event of an emergency.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
