Getting drafted by the San Jose Earthquakes is a dream come true for Williamson

As you can imagine, Thursday was a “dream come true” for Thomas Williamson.

San Jose Earthquakes in the 2021 first round MLS Draft uttered those familiar words, but the CAL striker was clearly excited to hear his name.

“I’m very excited to start with San Jose,” said Williamson upon selection. “They are a team I’ve been following for a very long time, and it’s great to be able to stay in the bay here and be close to my friends and family, and I hope I can play and join an amazing team organization.”

Williamson grew up in Orange County before heading to Berkeley, but he seems to stand by Norcal a lot at this point in his life, and he’s ready to work.

The Earthquakes was pleased with the selection, too.

“You obviously know that jumping into the Major League Soccer requires patience,” General Manager Jesse Fioranelli told reporters on a conference call on Thursday. “But what he has is a physical presence. He has the technical ability. The one thing that I think is most important is that he is excited to come. Thomas has personality and has expressed his strong desire to do well here in San Jose.”

Williamson described his role as a “dangerous striker” and emphasized his energy on the field, which would fit particularly well with coach Matthias Almeida’s regime.

As a draft not already signed to an MLS contract, Williamson would need to win a deal with Earthquakes. He said he was training six days a week with Cal as they prepared for the upcoming NCAA spring season, but when asked if he would stay with the Golden Bears for this season, as allowed by NCAA and MLS rules, before joining Quakes he resided or left school immediately and joined the San Jose for training camp, the player said he will speak to Earthquakes to determine his next move.

But Williamson was still happy with his choice and possibly to work alongside the best goalscorer in NFL history, Chris Wondolowski.

“This was one of the big things I was excited about when I heard Quakes calling my name because apparently everyone knows Wondo and what he did for American football, I mean I grew up watching him at the World Cup when I was younger. Just an idol, to say the least. And I will. All I can is to watch it and learn from it, and you know, until I’m a little surprised, so I’m looking forward to it very much, “said Williamson.
