Democratic Republic of the Congo: Ebola outbreak remains international emergency: WHO | Instant news
GENEVA (Antara News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday it is extending the designation of a global emergency for Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) after new cases are discovered.
The announcement came just one day after the central African country was expected to announce that the disease had ended.
This epidemic has killed 2,276 people since it erupted in the east of the country in August 2018. In order to announce its completion, new cases will not be reported for 42 days – twice the incubation period.
But when the WHO’s Emergency Committee met on Friday – just three days before the outbreak officially ended – to determine whether an announcement on so-called emergency public health of international concern would be canceled, a new case was reported.
The committee met again on Tuesday afternoon and the World Health Organization said in a tweet that it had decided that “despite the reduced risk of international Ebola spread, they consider this event to be a public health emergency of international importance and requires international coordination and support.” “
The WHO said in a separate tweet that the committee also called for more vaccines to be given to high-risk populations “because vaccination is the best public health tool to prevent and control the spread of the Ebola virus.”
“We now have three cases, two people are dead, one person is still alive,” WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told reporters at a brief conference in Geneva on Tuesday.
He said that all communications from the cases were tracked, fortified and closely followed.
On Friday, Congolese health authorities announced that a 26-year-old registered man had died from illness and a young woman who had been treated at the same health center died on Sunday.
The two died in the city of Beni, northeast of the center.
Because of the changing situation, Harris said, the WHO decided to reconvene the emergency committee again on Tuesday to reassess whether the outbreak was still an international health emergency.
Meanwhile, Congo has begun a new 42-day countdown to mark the end of the 10th epidemic of deadly dengue fever.
