DOH launches C. Luzon vaccination drive vs measles, polio

Angeles City, Pampanga – The Ministry of Health (DOH) launched a vaccination campaign against measles, rubella and polio on Friday to protect children from diseases that can be prevented with these vaccines.

The city was selected to host the Phase II regional launch of the Measles-Rubella and Oral Polio Vaccine Supplementary Vaccination Activities (MR-OPV SIA), which will begin February 1-28.

One-month vaccinations in the area cover at least 95 percent of eligible children in Central Luzon.

A total of 967,997 babies and 9-59 months old children will receive the rubella vaccine, and 1,133,017 0-59 months old children will receive the bivalent oral polio vaccine, regardless of vaccination status.

Cassion said health protocols will be implemented throughout the vaccination campaign to prevent the transmission of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the community.

Infection prevention measures include wearing face masks, using alcohol-based disinfectants for children, temperature checks, physical distance, and daily screening of healthcare professionals.

From 2016 to 2019, the number of fully vaccinated children in Central Luzon was only in the 64-70 percent range of the target.

DOH CLCHD states that consistently low coverage of routine immunization can lead to recurrence of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, rubella, and polio.

From July to September 2020, two monovalent oral polio vaccines were given to children under the age of 5 in Central Luzon in response to a case of polio type 2 identified in Nueva Ecija.

However, Cassion said it needed to provide additional protection against other types of poliovirus.
