Australian Prime Minister says Bing could replace Google

Australia’s Prime Minister Canberra said on Monday he was confident that Microsoft could fill the void if Google carried out a threat to remove search engines from Australia.

Google executives said in a Senate hearing last month that search engines could be unavailable in Australia if the government plans to force tech giants to pay for news content.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has since told Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella about search engine Bing filling the space.

Morrison told the National Press Club in Australia that Microsoft is confident that Australians will not get worse.

These are big tech companies, and what’s important for Australia is that we have the right rules for the people, Morrison said.

He added that having a sustainable and commercially endorsed news environment in the country is essential to how democracy works.

Bing is Australia’s second most popular search engine, but it accounts for only 3.7% of the market share, Australian newspapers report. Google says it takes 95%.

Nadella began a conversation with Morrison on Zoom last week, the newspaper reported.

A Microsoft spokeswoman did not immediately respond to the request for comment.

The mandatory code of conduct proposed by the government aims to fairly pay Australian media companies for the use of news content sucked up by tech giants from news sites by Google and Facebook.

Google is being forced to pay news by other authorities. Last month, the company signed a deal with a group of French publishers, paving the way for the company to pay for digital rights. Under the agreement, Google negotiates a separate license agreement with the newspaper and pays based on factors such as daily issuance and monthly internet site traffic.

But Google is resisting Australia’s plans. Because it doesn’t have much control over the amount it has to pay. In the Australian system, if the online platform and news business cannot agree on the price of news, the arbitration committee will make a binding decision on payment.
