Mayor Garcetti joins actor Sean Penn for daily briefing – NBC Los Angeles

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was scheduled to provide his daily update on the state of coronaviruses in the city with actor Sean Penn, founder of Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) on Thursday.

Fire chief Ralph Terrazas and Dr. Cynthia Davis of Charles Drew University were also scheduled to join them at 5:15 pm press conference.

CORE, Sean Penn’s disaster relief organization, has already worked with the city to set up free trial driving sites. CORE helped rebuild Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.

Garcetti and the speakers held the press conference at the Crenshaw Christian Center, one of the test sites.

Garcettialso urged residents to fill out their census forms, saying the completion rate was only 40% in the city, well below the state-wide rate of about 50%.

Penn spoke, saying he has never seen such holistic leadership as between the Los Angeles Fire Department and the mayor, and hopes it will be a model for testing sites across the country.

The press conference took place as the Trump administration announced a plan to reopen the nation temporarily, saying that some states may reopen sooner than others.

As part of the plan, the guidelines state that states or regions must meet certain criteria before moving to gradual opening. For example, there should be a downward trajectory of documented cases of COVID-19 over a 14-day period and a robust screening program should be in place for health workers at risk.
