Prisoners praised for having Covid less than 2pc
According to official figures, only 67 prisoners in Irish prisons have tested positive for Covid-19 since the pandemic began.
The results of the Irish prison service in preventing the spread of the coronavirus are in stark contrast to countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, where prisons have proven to be pandemic hotspots.
Measures taken throughout Irish prisons have resulted in no deaths or prisoners requiring hospital treatment since March last year.
Ireland’s figure represents one in 56 prison populations of 3,791, or less than 2 pc, and was positive for Covid-19 during the pandemic.
This is just a small percentage of the cases recorded in the United States and the United Kingdom.
One in eight prisoners in England and Wales has tested positive for Covid-19 since the pandemic began.
In the United States, it is estimated that 377,497 prisoners who attacked prisons across the country were positive until the end of the first week of February.
Figures recorded by The Marshall Project, a non-profit journalism group on criminal justice, estimate that at least 2,400 prisoners have died from coronavirus-related causes in the United States, which has the largest imprisoned population in the world.
Caron McCaffrey, director of Irish prisons, said prisons in the country were operating at unusual times.

Of the 67 cases that occurred, 27 were prison-based transmissions and 40 were community transmissions from prisoners who entered the system.

Vulnerable prisoners, including those over 70, were cocooned and had a strong contract tracking model.
