ConocoPhillips sells petroleum leases in Permian Basin, DJ Basin

Houston oil company ConocoPhillips is leaving the DJ basin in Colorado and has sold its Waddell Ranch lease in the Permian Basin in west Texas, the company said in a statement Thursday morning.

Financial terms and buyers have not been released.

The Waddell Ranch lease included the company's only vertical oil wells in the Permian Basin. ConocoPhillips still holds many leases in the West Texas shale area, where it continues to use horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.

At the time of the sale, the company's DJ Basin wells produced only 11,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day while the Waddell Ranch wells produced only 4,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

ConocoPhilliops acquired the lease for the Waddell Ranch in 2006 when it purchased Burlington Resources. Burlington and ConocoPhillips have filed a total of 619 drilling licenses on the lease since 1996. Over 96% of these drilling licenses were for vertical wells.
