Queensland Health says Cairns Hospital is safe after workers test positive for COVID-19

Queensland Health continues to test hundreds of people who have come in contact with hospital staff in Cairns infected with COVID-19.

The ministry launched a contact follow-up program on Friday after staff members working in a pathology lab above the cancer treatment center tested positive.
Workers currently in quarantine may have contacted as many as 270 people.
The Ministry of Health confirmed that 81 of these people (mainly health workers) returned negative results.
Don Mackey, executive director of Cairns and Hinterland Hospitals and Health Services, said cancer patients were not at risk.
“The lab had a very strict protocol for infection control, and there was no risk to patients or people receiving blood products,” Dr. Mackie said.
“I take this very seriously and want to reassure the community that it is safe to come to the hospital.”
The Pathology Queensland Laboratory was closed on Friday for thorough cleaning and reopened on Saturday.
All laboratory staff were put in quarantine and reinforcements were sent from Brisbane to cover them.
