Google DeepMind has released an open search to help fight coronaviruses

DeepMind, Google’s AI unit, has just released predictions of the protein structures associated with the coronavirus that causes the disease known as COVID-19.
These predictions were taken from the new DeepMind deep learning system but have not yet been tested ly, DeepMind noted in a blog article announcing their findings.
DeepMind said it would normally wait for the results to be reviewed by an academic journal, but that it skips this process given the "potential severity and temporal sensitivity of the situation".
The predictions are open-source, allowing any researcher to rely on, adapt or share the results of DeepMind.

DeepMind, Google’s artificial intelligence unit, joins the global effort to learn more about COVID-19 as the disease toll spreads rapidly across much of the world .

The UK-based team has just used the new DeepMind deep learning system to share their predictions about the protein structures of the coronavirus, which causes the disease. The system uses a machine learning technique known as "free modeling" to help it predict protein structures when no similar protein structure is available.

Scientists around the world are rushing to learn more about the new coronavirus that has swept through China and spread to 86 other countries, as of last count. At least 288 people died on Thursday outside mainland China.

The results of DeepMind hope to reduce the months of effort generally used to determine the protein structure of a virus.

"Knowing the structure of a protein provides an important resource for understanding how it works, but experiments to determine the structure can take months or more, and some prove to be intractable," a blog post announcing the noted results.

And given the "potential severity and temporal sensitivity of the situation," DeepMind said it either skips the verification process or waits for it to be peer reviewed by an academic journal before its publication. This is in line with other scientific research that has been published in peer-reviewed journals and on preprinted servers without peer review, as this process can take months.

"We emphasize that these structural predictions have not been verified ly, but hope that they can contribute to the interrogation of the scientific community on the functioning of the virus and serve as a platform for generation of 39; hypotheses for future work in the development of therapies, "said the blog.

"Normally, we are waiting to publish this work until it has been peer reviewed for an academic journal. However, given the potential gravity and the temporal sensitivity of the situation, we are publishing the planned structures as we currently have them, under an open license so that everyone can use them, "he added.

The open license will allow any researcher to tap, adapt or share the results of DeepMind.

Google acquired the London-based research entity DeepMind for £ 400 million in 2014. The company has already used AI to advance healthcare, develop models to identify eye diseases and detect cancer by the neck.
