It’s hard to fight the risk of immunization at risk without critical health services, WHO warns

we must not risk losing the fight to protect everyone, everywhere, against vaccine-preventable diseases. These diseases will vomit if not vaccinated. ”
WHO is working with partners around the world to accelerate the research and development of a safe and effective vaccine and to ensure equal access to the billions of people who will need it.
But even with the accelerated process, it will take time to develop the COVID-19 vaccine. Precautions are now crucial to protect against disease, including diseases for which vaccines already protect children and adults.
Too many people are still excluded from the benefits of the vaccine
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world had made tremendous progress in securing vaccinations for children. In 2018, 86 percent of children under the age of five are vaccinated with three doses of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP3) and
one dose of the measles vaccine increased from 72 percent in 2000 and 20 percent in 1980. The number of children paralyzed by polio has decreased by 99.9 percent worldwide.
Yet global vaccination coverage is still far from the 95 percent coverage needed to fully protect communities from a preventable epidemic of this disease.
In 2018, nearly 20 million children worldwide – more than 1 in 10 – have missed life-saving vaccines, such as measles, diphtheria and tetanus. Approximately 13 million children have never received vaccines, placing them and their communities
at risk of illness and death. Most of these children live in countries with already fragile health care systems, which limits their access to basic health services when they become ill.
Measles continue to be an ever-present threat, especially if the vaccination rate drops. Current projections show that as many as 800,000 people may have contracted the disease in 2019. In 2020, there is growing concern about another
recurrence, especially if vaccination rates fall due to the delay or suspension of planned immunization activities as a result of COVID-19.
Outbreaks of polio, diphtheria and yellow fever have also raised major concerns, especially in countries that are least able to respond quickly and decisively to the outbreak, as seen in previous emergencies, such as the outbreak of polio in Syria in
2013.

As the response to COVID-19 continues, countries must now act to protect immunization services to further reduce the outbreak and loss of life. This includes enabling emergency reimbursement programs where
