Valor Christian tops Regis Jesuit in state hockey semifinals
DENVER For the third time in the high school hockey season, Valor Christian and Regis Jesuit shared the ice.
For two of Colorado's early programs, the third game meant more than the previous two. First, the winner would go on to Tuesday's state championship game at the Pepsi Center. But more importantly, each team was playing with a heavy heart after the sudden and unexpected death of Cale Woodley, the son of Jesuit trainer Regis and a former Raiders.
Valor Christian, seeded, won the game 2-1, but respectful rivalry between the two teams came to the fore as hugs were split after the final whistle.

The deciding goal for the Eagles came from a hard rebound from the boards and skate of Regis Gage Bussey's Jesuit goalkeeper. He was out of Pahos' stick and when he pulled him out at the start, he didn't know it would be a chance for a rebound that he would get.
"I didn't think this ball would go in," said Pahos. "Nobody did it. I just pulled him off the boards and he got out of his skate."
Although he amazes players on the ice, Gwozdecky's experience as a college and professional coach made him aware of the bump that the puck can take off the boards.
"I don't mean we are working on this piece today," said Gwozdecky. "But we were working in pre-game skating to get our defenders to use the rebounds from the end wall."
