COVID-19 cases surge 23% in Illinois
The number of new coronavirus cases surged in Illinois during the week ending Sunday, with 23,130 reported, a 23% increase. Last week there were 18,801 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Illinois is ranked 13th among the fastest coronavirus spreads per capita, according to a USA TODAY network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. Last week, the United States added 490,277 reported cases of coronavirus. This is an increase of 10.3% from the previous week. Nationwide, 35 states had more cases in the most recent week than in the previous week.
Many states did not report the Easter incident. This makes interstate comparisons inaccurate, and weekly comparisons within states also inaccurate.
Within Illinois, the worst weekly outbreaks per capita occurred in the counties of Peoria, Stark, and Woodford. Overall, the newest case was added in Cook County, with 9,604 cases. DuPage County, 1,913 cases. Will County, 1,313 people. Weekly cases increased in 64 counties from the previous week. The worst increase from last week’s pace was in the Cook, Kane, and Dupage counties.

Illinois ranks 17th in the state, with at least one vaccination, and 38.1% of its population is at least partially vaccinated. The national percentage is 35.9%, as shown by USA TODAY analysis of CDC data.
In the week ending Sunday, Illinois reported receiving an additional 874,803 vaccine doses compared to 806,466 in the previous week. Overall, Illinois reported 7,363,280 doses.
Throughout Illinois, cases decreased in 30 counties, most in Madison, vermilion, and saline counties.
In Illinois, 139 people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Sunday. The week before that, 133 people were reported dead.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 1,279,663 people have been coronavirus-positive and 23,793 have died from the disease in Illinois, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 31,197,873 people are positive and 562,066 are dead.
