County Emergency Services Bureau urges the San Diegans to prepare for earthquakes –

San Diego (KUSI) – In honor of California Earthquake Preparedness Month, the San Diego County Emergency Services Office today reminded residents not to be caught by surprise and have a plan for how to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake.

The announcement came after a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck Borrego Springs early Wednesday and sent a slight tremor felt across the San Diego area.

The earthquake occurred just after 3:50 am 6.4 miles south of Borrego Springs, at a depth of about 4.3 miles, according to a computer-generated report from the United States Geological Survey.

Reports on USGS “Did You Feel It?” The map showed that slight vibration can be felt across San Diego County, including Powai, San Diego, Spring Valley, Lemon Grove, El Cajun, Albin and Jammuels.

No damages or injuries were reported.

San Diego County is home to three major active faults: the Rose Canyon Fault – which runs along the coast, through Downtown, Old Town and La Jolla – and the San Jacinto and Elsinore Fault, which runs through the northern and eastern regions of the county.

Large earthquakes along these faults can disrupt roads, transportation, and services like water, gas, and phone connections for weeks or months. Coastal areas are also at risk from a tsunami.

As part of the state’s 2021 “Don’t get caught guarding” campaign, county and state Office of Emergency Services officials are encouraging residents to update their emergency plan, register for local emergency alerts, and download an earthquake early warning app.

OES County will launch earthquake early warning technology, ShakeReadySD, in the SD Emergency app in July. When enabled, ShakeReadySD is designed to alert iPhone and Android users seconds before an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or higher with moderate to strong vibration in an area so residents can quickly take the right actions to protect themselves.

Meanwhile, California residents can download the free MyShake state app on iPhones and Android devices. The MyShake app, managed by Cal OES, is part of the Earthquake Warning California system that likewise uses a network of ground motion sensors located across the state to alert users through the app and a wireless emergency alert system to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” seconds before its arrival.
