A day after the 6.4-magnitude earthquake, Suntbot in Assam struck six tremors

The Suntpur region in Assam was hit by six earthquakes, Thursday, a day after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the state.

An earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale jolted Suntpur in the early hours of Thursday morning, the National Seismological Center said, adding that this was the sixth tremor to occur in the area on Thursday after 12:00 am.

According to the National Statistics Center, the quake struck at 2.38 a.m. and its epicenter was 38 km west and northwest of Tizpur, at a depth of 11 km.

Earlier in the day, earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.6, 2.9, 4.6, 2.7 and 2.3 on the Richter Scale struck Suntebor at 12.24am, 1.10am, 1.20am, 1.41am and 1.52am, respectively.

Before that Wednesday, about 10 earthquakes struck Suntbor throughout the day. The strongest was an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale that struck Wednesday morning.

The effect was felt in many northeastern states, parts of West Bengal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.

There have been reports of massive damage to buildings and other structures from all over Assam, mostly in the central and western cities of Tizpur, Nagaon, Guwahati, Mangaldwe, Dikyaguli, and Morigaon.

“Cracks have arisen in many private and public buildings. However, so far, there have been no reports of any serious damage such as collapsing buildings or disrupting any major infrastructure,” the association said.

A detailed damage assessment is conducted in coordination with the district disaster management authorities, fire and emergency services, national and state disaster response forces and experts from the College of Engineering in Assam.

According to the NCS, the region is very seismically active as it lies at the top of the seismic hazard zone V associated with collision tectonics as the Indian plate subducts below the Eurasian plate.

“Effectively recorded historical earthquake data (NCS catalog) reveal that the region is affected by medium to large earthquakes and the most prominent event among them is the July 29, 1960 earthquake in Assam of magnitude 6.0,” NCS said in a statement.
