Earthquake and tsunami hazards captivate East Coast school students in a new promotional show

Students at Hatea-a-Rangi and Te Kura Kaâ pan Māori o Tokomaru in Tairāwhiti were the first to take part in a new promotional tour aimed at educating about the risks posed by the earthquake and tsunami in the Hikurangi region.

The school promotional tour developed by East Coast LAB (Life at the Boundary) and presented by a teacher from the National Aquarium of New Zealand will visit 10 schools from Tairāwhiti all the way to Wellington. The promotional campaign is funded by the Earthquake Commission (EQC).

The Hicurangi subduction zone runs along the boundary as the tectonic plate in the Pacific Ocean moves under (descends) the Australian plate. The area extends 50-100 km offshore from Gisborne to Marlborough and is the largest and most active fault in New Zealand.

It produced 10 major earthquakes over the past 7,500 years, and the last major earthquake was of magnitude 8, between 470 and 520 years ago.

“Subduction zone faults are responsible for most of the largest earthquakes and tsunamis in the world, with Japan 2011 being the latest example,” says Kate Porsen, East Coast Lab Project Leader.

Boersen says the M7.1 earthquake off the East Cape and two major earthquakes in the Kermadec Trench in northern New Zealand, which triggered the tsunami evacuations, mean the school’s promotional campaign has a new significance.

“The Eastern Cape earthquake, or Te Araruwa, did not occur on the border of Hikurangi, but it was very close and many areas that felt that the earthquake with greater intensity might also be the areas most affected by the Hikurangi event. So, earthquakes and tsunamis are two of the risks that adults and children are aware of Both at the moment. “

During the school sessions, students will learn about the latest science of risk and impact through interactive activities and even be able to create a tsunami on their own, in a portable tsunami wave tank.

“Increasing understanding of natural hazards among young Aotearoa is an essential part of our general education program at EQC,” says Dr. Joe Horrocks, Head of Resilience and Research at EQC. “We know that when we present this information at a young age, they have a good chance of sticking to this knowledge and carrying it into adulthood.”

Next stop in the roadshow is Hawke’s Bay.

The promotional campaign will visit these schools in the coming weeks and more locations will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
