Mickey McNicol: “I heard more depression in one night than I was a nurse all the time.”

Mickey MacNicole has not yet begun to become a nurse for the COVID-19 crisis in New York City.

She was not expecting long shifts that would leave her face swollen and rough. She did not imagine herself as the lifeblood of patients fighting for their lives and families who could not hold their hands.

But it was more than a coincidence that the 25-year-old Ben State graduated to a 13-week mission to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Queens a few weeks ago.

MacNicol has been thinking about a career in the healthcare field since 2010 when it witnessed an earthquake that killed more than 100,000 people in its native Haiti.

MacNicole, who was fifteen years old and was living in an orphanage in Port-au-Prince at the time, left Haiti shortly after the earthquake when it was adopted by a couple from Hershey.

The college brought her to Erie. A job at St. Vincent Hospital convinced her to stay for a while.

Earlier this spring, MacNicol was planning to leave. She accepted an assignment as a travel nurse in Cincinnati.

But as the coronavirus began spreading in the United States, this employment was canceled.

Her recruiter offered another alternative. Would you be considered a crisis nurse in New York City?

It was not an easy decision. MacNicol said that she contacted family and friends for advice.

“In my head, I registered for it. I felt invited to do so.” “I always felt the call for it. After the earthquake in Haiti, and after seeing people suffer and die in front of me, then I made the decision that I was going to the medical field.”

But this task was different. MacNicol will be at the center of the COVID-19 crisis in a state where more than 12,700 people have died from the virus.

She said, “I decided though I am very afraid, I will go and do it anyway.”

MacNicol, who drew her experiences on her Facebook page, using her birth name, Micky Baptiste, said these concerns are justified.

“The first week was very difficult,” she said. The words “blue symbol”, which indicates that someone is in a state of breathing cessation, have become alarmingly familiar.

MacNicol said: “I’ve never heard of so many code codes.” “I heard more depression in one night than I was a nurse all the time. It was frightening to know how quickly people lost their lives and how fast and powerful this virus was.”

What made this 25-year-old, only two-year-old nurse, serve in this medical pressure cooker?

Her adoptive parents for 10 years had a significant impact.

Her mother, Stephanie MacNicole, is a family physician at the Hershey Medical Center. Her father, Rodger MacNicole, encouraged her love of photography, which led her to found a photo blog for the people of Pennsylvania in Hernand.

She told a BenSherd State University publication, her biggest achievement at the college was her senior fundraising campaign she was holding at the end of her early and senior years. In exchange for a high imaging session, MacNicol asked students to donate what they could afford, and gave money to local charities.

One day, she expects to be proud of the work she is doing now.

On most days, the 12-hour night shifts seem more stressful than heroic. MacNicol, working strictly with COVID-19 patients in the 240-bed hospital, said it’s just harder to do its job under these conditions.

There can be no shortcuts. Before entering the patient’s room, she had to put a headdress on her hair, a mask on her face, a dress and protective glasses.

“Patient care is taking longer than usual,” she said. “We have to make sure everything is in the room because you can’t go out and get something.”

In one of my Facebook entries, she explained, “I also want to spend a lot of time doing it even though the majority of them don’t speak or alert enough to understand me.”

And she continued, “I talk to them as if they hear me. I’m not sure they can hear, but this cannot hurt. Sometimes I sing (I know I’m a stranger) and / or I pray for them.”

Prayers are not always answered as often as you like. Some patients do not survive.

She said, “It really destroys the bodies.” “It (the virus) does not know your background. It comes to everyone, young or old. Young parents are losing their lives knowing that they have children back home. It is really sad.”

It does not escape feelings.

She said, “I cried in the middle of the shift because of how difficult things are.”

McNicol, who used her cell phone as a lifeline for patients and their families, worries about the second wave. But she also sees signs of hope, and a decrease in the number of new cases.

On her Facebook page, she writes about switching without hearing a single icon.

“It made me happy because it reminded me that there is hope. I hope that God has not forgotten us. I hope that all prayers from all over the world will be raised and grace will be revealed.”

MacNicol said it expects to be ready to return to Erie and a part-time job in St. Vincent when her current assignment ends in mid-July.

You may stay longer in New York if necessary. Hopefully there will be no need.

“As long as they don’t need my help, I pray I don’t have to stay any longer. I want this battle to end.”
