WHO declares polio eradication in Philippines after vaccine campaign
The World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday that the Philippines was once again released from polio after a successful vaccination campaign that raised expectations for Covid-19 vaccination in a country suffering from distrust of jabs. ..
Polio reappeared in 2019, about 20 years after the last case was detected, and a national effort to immunize millions of children against serious illness has begun.
At least 17 people have been infected, but health officials have said they have not detected the virus in their children or the environment in the last 16 months.
“We are celebrating our liberation from polio,” said Rabindra Abeyasinghe, WHO representative of the Philippines.
More than 80% of unvaccinated children have been vaccinated in a national effort, and Abeyasinha said it was “enough to stop the infection.”
The 2019 epidemic began shortly after the deadly dengue and measles epidemics, as vaccination rates declined in part due to unsuccessful vaccination against dengue a few years ago.
Polio is highly contagious and can lead to paralysis and death. There is no known cure.
The virus that reappeared in the Philippines is a genetic mutation from a weakened wild-type polio strain contained in oral vaccines used to control the disease worldwide.
Health officials in the Philippines hope that the success of the polio vaccine effort will be replicated in the spread of the new coronavirus infection.
Only about 1.6 million people, or just over 1% of the population, have been vaccinated against the disease. The ice age pace has been attributed to supply shortages and safety concerns.
“There are many studies showing that vaccines are unreliable, but this (polio) campaign has proven not,” said Rosario Bergale, Under Secretary of Health.
“Hopefully, we hope that these types of activities and these types of efforts will be patterned in parallel when the Covid-19 vaccine is implemented and ready for supply.”
