Detecting glaucoma in new eye test 18 months before clinical trial using AI and dye
New artificial intelligence-based diagnostics have been able to detect early signs of glaucoma at the cellular level in clinical trials one and a half years ago with current test methods.
Initially developed at University College London with funding from the Welcome Trust, this test begins with a fluorescent dye injected into the bloodstream. After finding the way to the eye, genetically engineered proteins bind molecular markers to the surface of the afflicted and dying neurons of the retina.
The dye brightens the damaged cells when viewed with standard imaging equipment. A test for detecting retinal cell apoptosis, known as DARC, uses an automated AI algorithm to scan an image and predict the potential risk of progression of glaucoma and future blindness. In this study, researchers were able to accurately measure and measure retinal cell damage 18 months before a standard OCT eye scan.
