Race Does Not Affect Genetic Risk That Increases Breast Cancer Risk-Consumer Health News
Tuesday, June 15, 2021 (HealthDay News)-A new study that contradicts previous studies shows that black and white women have the same proportion of breast cancer-related gene mutations.
About 5% of both groups of women were found to have genetic mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer.
“The findings challenge a small study in the past that found that black women face greater genetic risk, and race should be an independent factor when considering genetic testing. “Suggestions,” said Dr. Susan Domcheck, executive director of the BRCA Basser Center, the lead author of the study. At the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.
“We shouldn’t change the test guidelines based solely on race,” she said in a college news release. “Rather, our efforts should focus on ensuring equal access and uptake of testing to minimize the gap between care and outcome.”
Compared to white women, black women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer before age 50, or estrogen receptor (ER) negative and triple-negative breast cancer.
It was unclear whether this was due to racial differences in breast cancer-related genetic mutations, and whether race could guide genetic testing.
Of the nearly 4,000 black women and more than 25,000 white women included in the study, there were no statistically significant differences in breast cancer-related gene mutations. They were found in 5.65% of black women and nearly 5.1% of white women.
For both black and white women, young age and ER-negative breast cancer were risk factors for genes most strongly associated with breast cancer, such as BRCA1, BRCA2, and PALB2.
Researchers also found that black women were much less likely to receive genetic counseling and testing, primarily due to differences in doctor recommendations and access to care.
