The country’s health minister, Jens Span, told CNBC on Monday that Germany is studying how to implement a progressive recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there are more than 128,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Germany and about 3,000 deaths.

Span said the German government was now trying to find a “correct balance” between health and economic considerations.

“I would say it is not the health of people versus the economy because they are very connected,” Span said. “You need a strong economy to have a full health system, for example. Or unemployment and stagnation are also dangerous to a person’s mental and physical health.”

Germany received praise, though cautious, for responding to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Span said he was “modest” but not “confident” about how Germany is dealing with the spread of the corona virus.

He cited the strength of the German health care system, especially the large number of intensive care unit beds, as one of the reasons why the country is so well equipped to respond to the epidemic.

Span said the country is also initially focusing on testing capacity. He said the country has a strong laboratory network and indicated that the first Covid-19 diagnostic test was developed in Germany in January.
