Canadians abandon cannabis storage amid COVID-19, say leaders

TORONTO Canadians slowed their buying spree when they bought pot in the middle of the pandemic, said leaders of a cannabis company.

Aurora Cannabis Inc. has noticed that the boom in sales of COVID-19 cannabis has dissipated, said Michael Singer, Acting General Manager.

“There was some sort of pantry shipment in late March when there was concern that the supply chain would close and that cannabis as an industry would be deemed essential,” he said. declared.

After the industry was seen as an essential service in several provinces, he said, things returned to pre-pandemic levels in April.

“The behaviors were very similar to those before this process of loading the pantry in late March.”

In the third quarter of Aurora, which ended March 31 and which included the first weeks of many Canadians working at home and physical distance, the Edmonton company sold 12 729 kilograms of cannabis, 39% more than the previous quarter.

This peak was also observed in March and April by provincial pot distributors Ontario Cannabis Store and Société québécoise du cannabis.

The SQDC declined to say how large their increase was, but the OCS said in mid-April that its online orders had tripled since COVID-19 began deploying across the country.

The OCS received between 2,500 and 3,500 orders before March 9. In the weeks following the massive adoption of physical distance, these orders doubled to 5,000. Orders doubled again to 13,000 in one week.

“Although there is likely some storage, orders have remained at the level of over 5,000 orders per day; still much higher than before COVID-19. Many products, including edibles and seeds continue to sell quickly, “Daffyd Roderick, OCS’s director of communications, wrote in an email.

The spokesperson of the SQDC, Fabrice Giguère, would not say Friday if the distributor has since experienced a decline.

The initial spike and COVID-19 posed challenges to the cannabis industry, which was already struggling with massive layoffs, the deployment of edibles and executive shakeups.

Aurora reorganized the layout of the facilities, adjusted the workers’ schedules, granted staff bonuses, added additional screening measures and deployed the use of personal protective equipment.

The company also pushed the government to get relief and be named an essential service.

Aurora’s lobbying is not over because “you always want more and what we want is to be treated fairly,” said Singer.

Meanwhile, cannabis distributors in several provinces, including Ontario and Alberta, have warned of delivery delays due to increased orders. The OCS has recruited and expanded its messaging offerings to respond to interest in cannabis.

A wave of activity during the pandemic prompted the Winnipeg-based cannabis chain Delta 9 Cannabis Inc. to hire 76 new employees, said John Arbuthnot. This represents an increase of around 30% for its workforce.

Pedestrian traffic in its stores is still high and the size of the carts has increased, but there has been a change in consumer attitudes, he said.

“We certainly notice that the feeling of customers in stores has gone from” Oh my God, I need to make one last big purchase “to more simply to resume business as usual. But it seems to us that the recovery business is continuing, “he said.

Delta has not seen a drop in sales or demand, even if people are not crowded, as more edibles and new products hit the shelves and the price of cannabis is falling, he said. .

“We are reaching a point where the prices of these products are starting to become fairly competitive compared to what people may have been used to on the black market,” he said.

“We are finally starting to put more strain on customers who previously continued to access the black market.”
