London Stock Exchange services affected by Microsoft outage
A series of technological glitches disrupted services at airlines, banks and the London Stock Exchange on Friday, triggering an unexpected cascade of outages that spread from the United States to Asia after Microsoft Corp. announced a blackout of its online services, according to various media reports.
The LSE Group, which runs the London Stock Exchange, said it was suffering from a global technical problem that was preventing the publication of information.
In a service notification, the LSE announced that the RNS news service is currently experiencing a third-party technical failure globally which is preventing the publication of information on www.londonstockexchange.com. Technical staff are attempting to restore the service. Other group services, including the London Stock Exchange, continue to operate as normal.
According to media reports, the first problems appeared on Thursday evening in the United States, attributed to an outage of Microsoft services such as Azure and 365. Frontier Airlines, a subsidiary of Frontier Group Holdings Inc., grounded its planes for more than two hours, citing problems with Microsoft's online services. The airline lifted the suspension of departures across the state and began the process of restoring flights at 11 p.m. New York time.
According to a Reuters report, Microsoft said the outage began at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, with a subset of its customers reporting difficulties with many Azure services in the U.S. Central region.
Azure is a cloud computing platform that provides tools to build, deploy, and manage applications and services. Microsoft is looking into an issue that affects several Microsoft 365 applications and services, the report said.
The disruption to Microsoft services had a global impact, affecting businesses such as airlines and banks. Indian airlines include Spicejet, Aksa Airlines, and Air India Express. The disruption to Microsoft cloud led to flight cancellations and delays.
In a post on X, Microsoft 365 Status wrote that the company is investigating an issue affecting users' ability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services.
