Major disruptions at Microsoft and Crowdstrike land planes
Computer systems at businesses and governments around the world have crashed after a botched update to a widely used cybersecurity program knocked out Microsoft Corp.'s systems.
George Kurtz, Chairman and CEO of CrowdStrike Holdings Inc.publishedMicrosoft's email service announced Friday that the flaw had been identified and a patch deployed, adding that it was not a cyberattack. Compounding the problem, Microsoft also reported an apparently unrelated issue with its Azure cloud service.
There have been few outages of this magnitude in recent years. CrowdStrike customers have posted blue error screens on social media as they were unable to access their laptops and corporate computers. These cascading outages underscore how a growing proportion of companies have moved their support services and processes online in recent years, seeking to cut costs or better unify their global operations.
“This is an unprecedented situation,” Alan Woodward, a professor of cybersecurity at the University of Surrey, told Bloomberg News. “The economic impact is going to be enormous.”
CrowdStrike is actively working with customers affected by a flaw found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not affected. This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed.

Microsoft said it is aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update to a third-party software platform, and is also working to restore Azure services as quickly as possible.

Australian company AGL Energy Ltd. said in a message on X that it is currently experiencing system issues due to an outage of CrowdStrike. Crowdstrike shares fell as much as 14% in early trading before markets opened after reports of the outage.
