New Austin ordinance requires grocery stores and pharmacies to impose social distancing

AUSTIN, Texas On Saturday, the mayor of Austin, Steve Adler, signed a new ordinance, requiring retail establishments such as grocery stores, pharmacies and warehouses to establish controls to require social distancing, which includes a 6-foot separation between customers in line.

Checks may include, but are not limited to, requiring each person to take a basket or place markers on the floor, says the order.

The city of Austin said the new ordinance came into effect at 7 p.m. Saturday and includes advice on essential infrastructure to secure guarantees.

Critical infrastructure includes energy, water, wastewater, transportation, banking and telecommunications networks.

The order aims to reduce the spread of the coronavirus as confirmed cases increase in central Texas. As of Saturday evening, there were 62 confirmed cases in Travis County.
