Tops, Wegmans and Dash install plexiglass to protect workers – The Buffalo News

The last weapon of grocery stores in the fight against coronavirus is plexiglass.

Stores are jostling to keep workers safe during the pandemic, workers being exposed to thousands of customers a day.

Wegmans, Tops Markets and Dash’s Market will install Plexiglas shields on their cash registers.

Tops said he would affix plexiglass to “as many front registers as possible”.

“When Plexiglas cannot be affixed due to equipment limitations, associates will receive face shields, which will also be used by Tops associates working in our pharmacy and customer service departments,” said said the company in a press release.

Face shields consist of a firm sheet of plastic that hovers all over the face, held in place with a headband.

Wegmans has started installing the shields, and Tops said it would start as early as Thursday. The project is expected to last a few weeks. The plexiglass is mounted on both sides of the cash register and ends near the customer’s keyboard.

“It’s quite a business because we have a few thousand records in our 101 stores,” said Michele Mehaffy, spokesperson for Wegmans.

Dash’s Markets tested the Plexiglas configuration on Wednesday and ordered supplies on Thursday to renovate all stores.

Tops has appointed a worker to clean registers, checkpoints, treadmills, keyboards, customer service desks, cash registers, and other surfaces that are often touched continuously throughout the day. Wegmans and Dash’s have cashiers who disinfect their stations throughout the day. Wegmans associates disinfect conveyor belts between each customer.

The three stores installed signs encouraging customers to keep a social distance and made gloves available to workers. Dash’s has made face masks available to employees.

Tops and Wegmans instituted “comfort zone” zones in front-end registers to maintain social distance between customers and workers. Dash said he had experienced comfort zones, but decided not to use them.

“We have small areas behind our front ends and we thought we would just force customers to overlap,” said Mark Mahoney, director of operations for Dash.
