Nominated by friends, peers and colleagues, the winners of these awards represent the unsung heroes of today’s modern businesses, recognizing the people who kept their organizations running smoothly during the global pandemic.
IT Pro Day was created to recognize the hard work of IT professionals, but this year it’s even more important to thank them for all they’ve done to keep the lights on in 2020. This year’s winners were selected by a jury made up of SolarWinds Chief Geeksand industry leadersDenny cherry, Karen lpez, and Silvia spiva. Each nomination was judged based on the achievement of each tech pro, including specific challenges, barriers to project or technology implementation, measurable results and data points, or other qualitative background / quantitative best illustrating the values and objectives described in the chosen category.
The winners of the IT Pro Day 2020 award are:
- Rookie of the Year: Alex Tomasik, IT professional for Reavis High School of Burbank, Illinois. This award recognizes newcomers to the profession who made an immediate impact, and that’s exactly what Alex has done this year. Not only did Alex surpass all expectations, but he went above and beyond to take the time to learn and develop new skills to help his career development. This includes the management of fiber cabling and the management of school infrastructure upgrades. In addition, his passion for customer satisfaction helped him win the Rookie of the Year award.
- Rockstar of the Year: UK based systems support team Smile together composed of Joe Butcher, Kate Neal and Nick Wills. This award honors those who have gone beyond the typical IT call of duty. In this case, Joe, Kate and Nick worked together as a team to accelerate their three-year strategy for a more ethical and environmentally responsible way of working in just six months, while ensuring that employees are able to maintain their productivity during and beyond. pandemic lockdown. - IT Mentor of the Year: Meka Egwuekwe, co-founder and executive director of CodeCrew, a nonprofit computer science organization for students in Memphis, Tennessee. For Meka, IT mentoring is a passion and a discipline. When the pandemic struck, Meka learned that 100 of his students did not have the technology they needed at home. He and his team worked with a local internet provider to secure low-cost internet access and purchase laptops for 12 students through a national grant.
- Pioneer: Earl Pace, co-founder of the Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA), a non-profit organization for minorities in the fields of computing and STEM. Founded with the mission of enabling upward mobility from the classroom to the boardroom, the Earls programs have introduced computer programming and web development to thousands of high school students. In 2020, BDPA reached its 45-year milestone and successfully hosted its annual BDPA Technology Virtual Conference and Diversity Career Fair and High School Computer Competition for virtually the first time due to the pandemic.
The accomplishments highlighted in the nominations are proof that IT professionals were built for times like these.
