St. Joseph's council reviews downtown street plans
ST. JOSEPH – Safety and the ability to walk are two key factors driving the landscaping efforts in downtown St. Joseph.
At its Monday evening meeting, St. Joseph's city council reviewed two potential downtown street revitalization documents, prepared by the city's engineer. Plans include a variety of projects, including new sidewalks, sidewalk extensions, trees, benches and other improvements.
City administrator Kris Ambuehl Both sets of plans aim to improve road safety in a few key areas.
"There have been some concerns about pedestrian safety, and a need to slow traffic on Minnesota Street. There are also places where the roots of trees have pushed concrete onto some of the sidewalks. So this project addresses many problems, not just one specific problem. "
Ambuehl says that the growth of downtown St. Joseph's business district has prompted city staff to consider how to improve the pedestrian experience.
"We want benches to be seated. Things like that encourage people to use the city center and to walk from place to place."
Ambuehl said that street landscape planning is in its infancy and that the council will continue to evaluate the options as they progress.
