NEW DELHI : India’s electricity consumption rose 11.45% to 55.37 billion units (BU) in the first half of October this year, mostly driven by buoyant industrial and commercial activities, according to government data.
Energy consumption in the country was recorded at 49.67 BU from October 1 to 15 last year, according to data from the Energy Ministry.
For an entire month in October of last year, power consumption was 97.84 BU.
So, extrapolating the half-yearly data gives enough indication that energy consumption could see double-digit year-over-year growth this month, experts say.
They said double-digit growth in energy use in the first half of this month showed trade and industrial demand improved with the easing of lockdown restrictions and would be better than that. In the coming months.
The government had imposed the national lockdown on March 25 to contain the spread of COVID-19. Energy consumption started to decline from March due to the decrease in economic activities in the country.
The COVID-19 situation has affected energy use for six consecutive months from March to August this year.
Energy consumption on an annual basis decreased by 8.7% in March, 23.2% in April, 14.9% in May, 10.9% in June, 3.7% in July and 1.7 % in August.
Data showed that electricity consumption rose 11.73% in February.
Energy consumption showed improvement after the lockdown of economic activities after April 20.
After a six-month gap, power consumption grew by 4.6% in September this year to 112.43 BU against 107.51 BU the same month last year.
Earlier this month, Energy and New and Renewable Energies Minister RK Singh also said: “In September our demand for electricity was higher than in September 2019. So growth has resumed. Despite the fact that the COVID problem persists, the growth in our energy use and demand has started. “
Peak power demand met, the country’s highest single-day electricity supply, from October 1 to 15 was recorded at 170.04 GW (recorded on October 7 and 8).
The peak demand demand satisfied for the month of October last year was 164.25 GW (recorded on October 14, 2019).
Peak electricity demand in September this year grew 1.8% to 176.56 GW, down from 173.45 GW a year ago, the data showed.
Satisfied peak electricity demand had experienced negative growth from April to August this year due to the pandemic. Satisfied peak demand fell to 24.9% in April, 8.9% in May, 9.6% in June, 2.7% in July and 5.6% in August.
In March, it was stifled at 0.8%.
