SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A statewide home stay order for Missourians takes effect Sunday evening. This means new rules for essential businesses across the state. Retail stores will now be allowed to admit only a fraction of the customers they normally see.
Some Springfield stores are already trying to allow secure shopping, making changes to allow greater social distancing for buyers like Jennifer Stewart.
“This is just as important to employees as it is to customers,” said Stewart.
Walmart and Home Depot only allow a certain number of people at a time. The Walmart on W. Sunshine accommodates approximately 480 people at a time.
“I think limiting people is a good thing, I think, but I don’t think having them in one entry is the right answer,” said Stewart.
In most Walmart stores in Springfield, the entrance to the house and pharmacy is closed and customers are only allowed to enter the grocery store.
“This will reduce the problem,” said Stewart. “You’re going to have a lot of people too close to each other at this point of entry.”
Hy-Vee asks families to send one person to the store to do the grocery shopping and set up one-way aisles.
“Which is good because the aisles are not six feet apart and you find what you’re going there, people go down the aisles and you get a lot of congestion,” said Stewart.
The Academy only sells rifles and ammunition in its store. Ménards does not allow children under 16 or pets inside. All stores require customers to stay six feet apart.
“You can tell the people who take it seriously and the people who don’t take it seriously,” said Stewart.
Many changes are anything but practical for some, but this client said they could be worth it.
“If we all help each other and start thinking about each other instead of ourselves, we will succeed much faster if we just do what we are asked to do now,” said Stewart.
Heads of state and local urge everyone to stay home unless they need food or travel for essential work.
Greene County has already been the subject of a home stay order, but the state-wide warrant takes effect Sunday evening.
