Amazon pilot raises stock exchanges in the cloud

LONDON (Reuters) – A pilot by online giant Amazon and two exchanges showed how moving stock exchanges from expensive physical servers to cloud computing could save money and reduce the potential for outages, have the companies said Friday.

The Singapore Exchange SGX, Aquis Exchange, and London-based Amazon Web Services have said they have undertaken a proof of concept to show that trading stocks in the cloud can be fast and reliable enough.

He has proven himself technically capable, said Adrian Ip, director of the technology arm of Aquis Exchanges.

Exchanges using the cloud to date for trading are limited in size or niche, such as crypto asset trading, Ip said.

The Amazons were turning to multicasting or the ability to send data to many parties at the same time in the cloud, a key requirement for any sizable exchange, was a breakthrough, Ip said.

Although the exchanges spend millions of dollars on physical backup servers, there have been outages this year in Japan, Australia and Euronext in Europe, drawing close scrutiny from regulators.

A cloud-based exchange could be more resilient than relying on physical infrastructure distributed across regions, Ip said.

Mayumi Hiramatsu, vice president of Amazon Web Services, said the pilot project has shown a way to free customers from maintaining existing on-premises infrastructure.

Aquis and SGX are looking to advance their pilot’s findings with Amazon, which they believe could lead to savings of up to 90%.

We’ll look at how this can be scaled up globally. We will take a thoughtful and measured approach and engage with regulators and members, said Ip.

It comes at a time when regulators around the world are also increasingly looking at how financial firms are increasingly relying on third-party cloud providers like Amazon, Google and Microsoft for their critical services.

The European Union intends to be the first to introduce new laws to regulate this use of the cloud.
