FDA issues recall of spinach already under recall in Canada for Salmonella

A Canadian company is now recalling baby spinach in the United States after launching a recall in Canada because a positive laboratory test showed the fresh product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Vegpro International of Sherrington in Quebec, Canada, has distributed the recalled Fresh Attitude brand fresh baby spinach in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, according to a company recall notice issued by the Food and Drug Administration. The six US states involved are New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

The recalled spinach has expiration dates until December 5. It is therefore feared that consumers have packaging of the product at home. Consumers should not consume the recalled products in accordance with the recall notice.

No illnesses had been reported when the recall notices were posted.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product was possibly contaminated with Salmonella, subsequent investigation indicates that the issue may have been caused by the contamination of part of a batch of baby spinach, according to the recall notice issued by the FDA.

Consumers can determine if they have the recalled baby spinach on hand by looking for the following information on the label.
