Driver charged in accident that killed American postal worker

PLAINWELL, MI – The driver who hit a postal truck while delivering mail was charged with death.

Spencer Evan Baird, 36, was arrested on Wednesday (March 4th) on a charge of a serious violation causing death, according to a press release from the Allegan County Sheriff's Office.

Baird was driving a pickup truck on 10th Street, north of Plainwell, on January 6 when he hit a postal truck from behind, killing 55-year-old Sheila Gay Rackley, police said.

Captain Chris Kuhn, Allegan County Sheriffs, said Baird was working the third shift and was probably driving on a limited amount of sleep. He probably made his back, "crossed the fog line and hit the parked mail truck," said Kuhn.

Rackley, a U.S. postal worker, was delivering mail about three miles north of Plainwell, on 10th Street, south of Carrie Avenue, when her mail truck was hit from behind. When police arrived, they found the mail truck in a nearby ditch fully engulfed in flames, said the sheriff's office.

Rackley was found dead in the wreckage after the flames went out, police said.

Rackley worked for 11 years as a postal factor for the Plainwell US post office, according to his obituary published by Winkel Funeral Home. The 1982 graduate of Allegan High School was born on September 10, 1964.

Sheila loved animals, especially her dogs, said the obituary. She especially loved spending time with her family and taking care of her.

There was no drug or alcohol in the Bairds system at the time of the accident, and he was crossing the speed limit, said Kuhn. Baird was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the accident, police said.

This is a good reminder that driving is complicated and people often underestimate how complicated it is, "said Kuhn. A very simple mistake can result in very serious injury or death.

Baird is scheduled to appear in Allegan County District Court at 9 a.m. on Friday March 20 for a trial, according to court records. If convicted, Baird could face the suspension of his driver's license and up to a year in prison.
