New Zealand on Tuesday extended the national emergency for another seven days as efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic continue.

“At the suggestion of the Director of the Civil Defense Emergency Department, after consulting the Prime Minister, I consider a national emergency in place to support the COVID-19 response,” said Benny Hanari, Minister of Civil Defense.

“As we enter the fourth week in light of the national emergency, I would like to thank all New Zealanders for their commitment to helping us break the chain of transmission of the virus,” Henry said in a statement.

The state of emergency, first declared on March 25, gives authorities access to power that is not usually available. This includes closing or restricting access to roads or public places, providing rescue and first aid, food, shelter, etc., and providing important supplies, among other things.

However, the extension of the state of emergency has no effect on the closure of the Level 4 warnings already in the island nation, according to the government.

This means that everyone should stay home, except for those who provide basic services. It only opens supermarkets, dairy companies, health and medical facilities including pharmacies and food banks.

This is the second time in the history of New Zealand that a national emergency has been declared. It was last implemented in Christchurch on February 23, 2011 in response to an earthquake.
