EDITORIAL: Maintain legislative pressure for fair policies to reimburse COVID-19 concerts

 


Because of the coronavirus, did not go to concerts.

But many artists and ticket companies that run their shows acted like we were.

While people are struggling to pay their bills, entertainment companies like Live Nation and AEG have either clung to old refund policies or changed existing ones so they can keep your ticket money even longer.

They did this by not officially canceling the concerts, but by declaring them simply postponed.

Although these companies have changed their refund policies in recent weeks under pressure from state and federal legislators, it is clear that legislation is needed to prevent consumers from waiting too long for their money when concerts are canceled or carried over.

And it is clear that state and federal officials must continue to investigate how these companies manage our money.

What prompted the government to intervene was that a large number of people discovered that they could not obtain reimbursement for certain concerts which, technically, had been postponed and not canceled.

A policy change in March by Ticketmaster to offer only refunds on canceled concerts prompted an attorney general to investigate its refund policies. Members of Congress also intervened, and all of this outrage forced companies to change their policies.

According to Rolling Stone, AEG will now give ticket holders 30 days to request a full refund for shows that have already been rescheduled with solidified dates. Tickets for shows that have been rescheduled but do not yet have publicly confirmed replacement dates will not be eligible for reimbursement until new dates are announced, reported Rolling Stone.

With Live Nation, if your event has been canceled, you will be automatically reimbursed. If your event has been postponed, tickets will be valid for the new date. If you then want a refund, you have 30 days to request it, from the announcement of the new exhibition date, according to the Vulture website.

It is not known how long customers awaiting concert rescheduling will have to wait for their reimbursement. If you’re one of those fans, you have no choice but to wait. It is not fair.

Clients need more government protection to be able to get their money back when they feel they are not getting what they paid for.

Even if these entertainment companies have changed their policies in response to political pressure, there is nothing stopping them from changing their policies later.

Ticket buyers should not have to bombard the government with complaints and jump through hoops, and legislators should not have to threaten consumers with paying back their own money.

The Senate State Committee on Investigations and Government Operations must continue its investigation of the policies of ticketing companies to ensure that they are fair and that they place consumers above corporate profits.

And the legislature and the State Congress must pass clearer and more consistent legislation to ensure that this does not happen again.
