Actor Lawrence H. Robinson on BET’s “Tyler Perry’s Sistas” – CBS Philly
The actor comes out of the biggest role of his career in the new BET series called “Tyler Perry’s Sistas”. The show follows a group of single black women as they go through the ups and downs of life and the series is directed and produced by Hollywood tycoon Perry. Robinson was taken by surprise when he got the part and he’s so glad it all worked.
“Honestly, it was so unexpected. I was chosen for Netflix’s The Circle and I was pretty much going to shoot this show, “said Robinson in an interview with DJ Sixsmith from CBS Local. “My manager called me and told me I had auditioned for Tyler Perry and I think you can get this job. I came in and gave everything and booked the job the next day. It was a random success and I’m just grateful. At the end of the day, I put in the hard work to get to where I am right now. “
Robinson believes “Tyler Perry’s Sistas” is a success because the stories of the four black women universally resonate with the public. The actor is proud to be in the series and to work with someone like Perry.
“It’s relatable and we all know a black woman who’s like one of the characters,” said Robinson. “It particularly resonates with the black community. We have never really had a show like this. It’s four black women in a cast telling their stories and their stories. They are not the victim and they win. It’s good to see black women winning on TV. Women don’t always get the love and respect they deserve. Tyler Perry is a really serious individual. He doesn’t play on his empire and I respect that. At the same time, he is super nice and super graceful. When you get a job with him, you know you have to come and do your job. “
BET has already announced that Sistas will be back for season two and Robinson is looking forward to playing with Chris again. Although there were many different factors to his success, Robinson says that Philadelphia played a huge role in his journey.
“Philly is a tough place to grow up, but I’ve always had a tough skin,” said Robinson. “I was definitely one of these frank children. Therefore, I had a lot of confrontations and I had a lot of problems. As an actor, you have to make solid choices when you go into the audition room. I come from the neighborhood and I grew up defending myself quite often and in Hollywood it’s pretty much the same thing. You have to defend yourself. You must know your value and I feel like I have always known my value. “
