Actor Minoo Mumtaz has died in Canada
Veteran actor and dancer Minoo Mumtaz, sister of famous comedian-filmmaker Mehmood, has died in Toronto, Canada.
Minoo Mumtaz, who was 80, died Friday evening in a city hospital from various health problems.
His younger brother Anwar Ali’s wife, Mona Mathur Ali, said Minoo Mumtaz was recently diagnosed with cancer.
She was diagnosed with cancer a few days ago but that may not have been the reason for her death, there were other health issues. She was at her best cheerful. We spoke to her ten days ago on a video call, she was lovely, neat and radiant, ”Mathur Ali told PTI.
She said Minoo Mumtaz would meet her contemporaries, like veteran actor Saira Banu, whenever she visited India.
Born to father Mumtaz Ali, a dancer and character artist in 1940s movies, and mother Latifunissa Begum, Minoo Mumtaz was one of four daughters and four sons.
The actor, real name Malikunnisa, started out as a dancer and appeared in numerous films during the 1950s and 1960s.
She made her acting debut with Sakhi Hateemand appeared in a popular song Jab raat hai aisi matwaliof Mughal-E-Azam, another hit song Reshmi salwar kurta jali kaof Naya Daur, Sakhiya aaj mujhe neend nahinof Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Boojh mera kya maam re of CID, among others.
Some of his other notable works include films like Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Taj Mahal, Ghoonghat, Insan jaag utha, Gazal, Aladdinand Dharmapoutre.
Minoo Mumtaz is survived by her husband S Ali Akbar, one son and three daughters.
