‘Monsters Ball’ actor Coronji Calhoun Sr dies aged 30
Coronji Calhoun Sr, best known for playing Halle Berrys’ son Tyrell Musgrove in the 2001 film Monster ball, died at the age of 30.
His death was confirmed by his mother Theresa Bailey via a GoFundMe page, who said her son died on October 13. She raised money to help pay for her funeral.
As confirmed by WWL-TV (Going through People), Calhoun died of congestive heart failure and lung problems.
Bay and Monster ball Producer Lee Daniels apparently both contributed to the GoFundMe page, donating 3,394 each.
In an update released Wednesday, November 10, Bailey wrote: rest.
We are blown away by the outpouring of love that the Coronjis community and adoptive family showed during our grieving process. Although the financial burden has been lightened, we still mourn the loss of my son.
As we close this chapter, we ask you, remembering him, to love your neighbor as yourself, for this is what Coronji has done for his entire community.
Calhoun was 10 years old when he starred in Monster ball, which is his only acting credit.
The film follows the main character Letitcia Musgrove (Berry), who falls in love with the prison guard (Billy Bob Thornton) who flipped the switch to execute her inmate husband (Sean Diddy Combs) on death row.
Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress at the 2002 Oscars for her performance. Speaking ahead of the awards show, Berry explained how difficult it was to abuse Calhoun for the film, which played his artistically talented and overweight son.
In an interview in 2001, Berry said: It was a lot harder than even the love scene because [Coronji] was really 10 [years old] and obese.
I was worried about hurting him emotionally, not just doing the scene, but later. So I talked to him a lot, I hugged and kissed him a lot. He said: You don’t have to worry about what you say; It can’t be as bad as the way they treat me at school.
But now I hear he’s the most popular kid in his school. So i guess [the movie] aid.
