LIFE WITH CYNTHIA: Are you a good actor?

In her weekly column, Cynthia Breadner talks about the staging of life

“To be or not to be?”

I’m sure most recognize this famous line from Shakespeare. We have replicas of films and theatrical productions accompanying us. Another one that I remember very well is a line from a favorite and familiar movie (I just realized I quoted it last week as well!) The scene goes like this:

“Fraulien, I wonder, just curious, did my children climb trees today?” “

“Yes captain.”

“And where” (he holds up a piece of cloth), “did they get this? “

“Play clothes, I made them from the curtains in my bedroom. “

“You mean my kids wandered around Salzburg with nothing but old curtains! (Throwing down the rag).

It gets so bad that the woman screams, ” I have not finished yet ! “

He answers, “Oh yes you are, Captain! He corrects himself, continuing, “Fraulien, you are going to do your business right away and return to the Abby …”

If you haven’t guessed it yet, here’s a sample from The Sound of Music.

While you might not know it verbatim like me, I’m sure you are familiar with it. For the most part, all you need to do is jump into “Do-a deer, a female deer” or “Glimb Every Mountain” to experience the movie. I can see this film again, in its entirety, in my head.

Last night I went to a live musical theater production in Midland, a well-scripted and detailed two-person performance, a “two hands” as it’s called in theater parlance.

It was the story of two people who independently for 90 minutes tell the story of the last five years of their lives from each other’s point of view. The female lead is a young woman my daughter has always sung against year after year at the local music festival. If I remember correctly, every year she would get up, open her mouth, sing, then stop quickly, ask the referee if she could get some water, to come back and invariably take the first place. Her voice is still strong, clear and rich.

Live theater is such a fleeting experience. In its fleeting nature, live theater is there one moment and disappears the next to be captured in our memories. Each evening’s show is different from the previous one and sets the stage for the next. Every day of life between the curtains changes the actor forever. Live theater can only be reconstructed in your mind.

The Sound of Music has a 40th Anniversary Edition with additional features and memorabilia from all of the cast. This is how I know Christopher Plummer made a mistake when he called Julie Andrews “Captain” in this scene. In his outburst he stopped and corrected himself and went on. This error showed us, the audience, the crack in his character’s armor and was changed due to his effectiveness. If it had been live theater, he should have consciously changed the script every night after that moment. With the recording he was captured, not lost in the fleeting nature of the live scene.

The show we saw last night is one of 10 performances. Everyone is different and everyone is unique. Even the recording of these shows loses something in the wake of the capture. Like life, live theater is meant to be seen, watched, and then abandoned. Like life, our memories are what keeps the past alive and, in our hearts, and like life, it is up to us to remember greatness or sorrow, anger or joy, blessings. or curses. We saw some areas where we could have changed something, as the director, however, lingering on those moments detracts from the overall beauty of the whole. Like life, when you dwell on faults, there is a lot that is lost.

Life is a staging. Sometimes we are actors on the main stage and sometimes we observe from the audience. We all star in our own show and therefore we have to remember that there are many headlining performances happening around us every minute of every day. When these shows try to be on the same stage at the same time, chaos can erupt and worlds collide. Most of life is a spectacle on stage like last night and depends on repeating memory. There are times when the recorded version, like The Sound of Music, came out to prove a point. Taken from a dusty shelf, as proof that one memory is better than the other. Used to shoot the bullet of death from the hip of righteousness to claim victory. So what ? Dr. Phil asks if you’d rather be right or be happy? Proving the perceived imperfection of someone’s memory doesn’t always solve the challenge, it just breaks relationships and blurs relationships.

I have 10 years of theater experience, having performed in 11 shows in total. As recently as last night my daughter recalled from memory a few of the first two, when I was green and she was young, and we had a discussion about where and when. I think I’m right, and she accepted my callback, however, would she have refuted, why would it matter? Our memories are ours, we own them and claim them, and depending on where we were at the time, our filters gave way to what we kept from that time.

In 10 years, I’ve learned so much about myself playing characters both on and off the stage. I’ve incorporated this learning into my life and some days I can’t tell when I’m in my character and when I’m not. Each day it’s my turn to put on a loving, caring and kind show. As the lead actor, I choose what people will see when they read the script from my heart. If I am having difficulty with this script, it is my responsibility to rewrite it with the help of other people.

As you mess lines in your script, may you gracefully and compassionately realize, both to yourself and to others, that you can take the initiative to right the wrongs. Or maybe, like Christopher Plummer, your mistake will improve your character and show the flaws in your resolve. If you remember, in The Sound of Music, after he left, Maria walked in and heard him singing with the kids. She went upstairs to pack her bags, and he stopped her saying: “I was wrong! You’re right, I don’t know my children. Please stay.”

Where do you need to say the same line?
